Chippy Chipmunk Parties in the Garden

#93 of one zillion

Author and  Photographer: Kathy M. Miller
Publisher: Celtic Sunrise (2009)

Chippy Chipmunk Parties in the Garden follows the adventures of her backyard chipmunk searching for food, moving rocks, and avoiding predators.

The pictures in this story are outstanding. I would recommend this book on the pictures alone.  My kids liked the "cute pictures of Chippy" and I did too.  My favorite picture is actually a full page spread showing Chippy's progress as he hops through the back yard. There were many "awwww, look at that" moments during our reading.

I did find the text to be a little disjointed occasionally.  There were two times that I thought I had skipped a page, only to find out that I hadn't.  The kids only noticed these transitions because of my pauses.  The second time we read it, I knew what to expect and things flowed better.

That being said, I found Chippy to be a wonderful book. You show me a well composed picture of a chipmunk with its cheeks full of food and I am good to go.  The text offered us a chance to discuss chipmunk facts and when Chippy thinks there is a predator nearby, we paused to make predictions about what sorts of things would eat a chipmunk.

If your kids like nature, or your family has its own "Chippy" living in the backyard, I would highly recommend this book.

One Zillion Books was provided with a review copy of Chippy Chipmunk Parties in the Garden by Celtic Sunrise. The fact that a sample copy was provided, in no way influences our opinions of the book.
